New Moons are times of new beginnings, planting seeds, and setting intentions. This month the Sun, Moon, Chiron, and Neptune all conjunct Neptune’s discovery degree. The planet Neptune was discovered on September 23, 1846 at 25 degrees of Aquarius. The call for compassionate service, understanding, and unity becomes even more important. Mythologist Joseph Campbell said “Survival is the second law of life, the first is we are all one”. Let us invite the healing dance between Chiron and Neptune into our medicine bundle.

This New Moon, along with Chiron and Neptune, all activate the U.S. Moon in the Sibly chart. For many, the ideal of the American dream seems to be eroding or more elusive than ever. With the alarming rise in home foreclosures, inaccessibility to health care and the current credit crisis, the once held ideal and value of the American dream has turned into a nightmare. The New Moon is in opposition to Obama’s natal Uranus at 25 degrees of Leo! This clearly suggests that President Obama needs to make a radical shift with many of his current policies. The progressive wing of the Democratic party feels abandoned and betrayed by his promise to bring real change to Washington. His aloofness and detachment (Aquarius) in the health care debate left many in a
state of shock and disillusionment.

The degree for this New Moon from Zodiacal Symbology reads: Three fires blazing above three triangular hills, a cross sword floating above. Denotes one of mystic and reformative leanings who may be impressed by invisible forces for certain work on earth, but who may not be conscious of the part he is called to play. Venus conjuncts Jupiter in Pisces from the 14-16th (Valentine’s Day) offering blessings from the love goddess. A most favorable time for expanding social circles, spiritual pursuits, and financial generosity. Faith and trust brings fulfilling relationships. It’s a good time to make amends with someone you love.

Mars retrograde since December 20, 2009, goes direct (forward) on March 10, 2010. Mars turns retrograde only once about every two years. The Mars retrograde cycle is symbolic of the warrior laying down his sword in order to re-group before the next battle. In Mars retrograde we tend to think about ways of acting rather than pushing forward. Personal concerns and issues are always on a slow-burn during Mars retrograde periods. As Mars moves direct the warrior picks up his sword with a renewed sense of confidence and courage. Facing things direct and head on rather than through deflection becomes his new battle strategy. With Obama’s Sun in Leo and Mars moving direct, we hope he will regain a new sense of courage and act like a lion not a lamb!

Transiting Saturn in Libra conjuncts the Midheaven and squares Venus in the Sibly chart for the U.S.A. The major corporate banks continue to withhold lending to the public and with small businesses. There has been a movement to move money out of the giant corporate banks into community banks. The issues of fairness and equality (Saturn in Libra) begin to re-emerge toward the government’s policy of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ which is code for not letting gays, lesbians, or bisexuals from serving in the military. On January 21 the Supreme Court announces a landmark decision, establishing for the first time that corporations (Saturn) enjoy the same First Amendment free-speech rights (Libra) as individuals.

With the square between Saturn and Pluto on January 31, the CIA issues a warning that Al-Qaeda will attempt an attack on U.S. Soil in the next 3-6 months. This comes as no real surprise to most astrologers as the last Saturn/Pluto Square was back in 1993 which coincided with the first World Trade Center bombing. The opposition between Saturn/Pluto was back on that fateful day of September 11, 2001~ the second bombing and final death knell of the World Trade Center. Indeed, to be forewarned is to be forearmed!

New Moons are times of new beginnings, planting new seeds, and setting intentions. This is one of the more powerful lunations for the New Year as a partial Solar Eclipse. In general, eclipses are a New Moon or Full Moon on steroids and always carry an extra punch! Eclipses are like “Wild Cards” in the deck of life often signaling endings and new beginnings. More importantly they are harbingers of illumination and new revelations.

With the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Pluto, and the north node in Capricorn, this is a most favorable time to solidify new opportunities with our career and business plans. Capricorn is a sign of ascension, as it wants to scale mountains and reach the summit of life. This New Moon conjuncts Venus, helping us take responsibility and value commitment within our important relationships. Venus in Capricorn always demands respect! The last solar eclipse at this degree was back in January of 1991! What was going on in your life then? What’s happening in your life now?

One of the mythic archetypes for Capricorn is the myth of Hephaestus. He was the unloved and unwanted son of Zeus and Hera. Because he was born disfigured with a clubfoot they threw him off Olympus to die. Fiery Mars is retrograde until March 10 when he moves forward in motion and stays in Leo until June 6. Mars retrograde is not the best time to initiate new projects or take definitive action. It’s a good time to let go of old attachments that no longer serve our quest for wholeness. Power and control issues need to be transformed through compromise and equality in relationships. Transiting Pluto and Saturn aspecting Venus (money, possessions) in the USA chart, form a powerful T square pattern indicating the financial meltdown crisis (Pluto) will endure for at least another 12-? months. Neptune conjuncts the U.S. Moon on Jan. 27th, its final hit in this cycle. The Moon rules the Public and Neptune represents disillusionment. Many promises made by the politicians during the presidential campaign such as universal health care and ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan turned out to be nothing but a pipe dream. Public and political scandals continue to dominate the news media. The plight of the homeless continues to escalate at alarming rates. On any given night in America, anywhere from 700,000 to 2 million people are homeless, according to estimates of the National Law Center on Homelessness. The gap between income and housing costs needs to be lessened so people can keep their homes. We need more quality jobs with benefits that offer a living wage, rather than a lot of dead-end jobs that pay minimum wage. Let us all hope and pray for the end of predatory capitalism and awaken to a new humanitarian, compassionate social democracy.

Not all of Mercury retrograde is negative, though. Yes, cell phones and computers can get glitchy; the light can come on in your car and you take it to the mechanic and nothing is wrong with it. ( I always tell people, unless it’s the break light or something important, wait until after the retrograde to get it checked because it just might fix itself!) Anything with communication and transportation can go haywire and if you’re a Gemini or a Virgo, ruled by Mercury, it can be even more frustrating.

You must really be careful of what you say and how you say it. Words can be misconstrued. It’s also a bad time to start anything new or sign important contracts or documents. The exception can be someone who is born with Mercury retrograde ~ it does not affect them as much.

So what can possibly be positive? Lots! Mercury retrograde is an excellent time to contact or hear from people from your past! Rather than solicit new clients, return to your sphere of influence. Reach out to someone you need to REconcile with. It’s an awesome time to REconnect. Go back and FINISH old projects so when the retrograde period is over you can begin new endeavors with a clean slate. It’s not the best time to get married but how about REmarried? Rather than plan a trip to some place new, why not REvisit a favorite destination? Different people have different opinions on traveling while Mercury is retrograde. If it can be avoided, it probably should. Some plans may have to be REscheduled. It’s almost impossible to hook up with new people but an excellent time to get together with old friends or plan a REunion! Just about anything you can put “RE” in front of works. Refurbish, redo, reconnect etc. The one exception can be remodeling. If it’s your first time doing it and contracts are involved, try and wait until after. Things will have to be REdone.

Don’t go to a new agency, partner, or job if you can help it. Try to connect new endeavors with the past if that makes sense. Also, if you’ve had a dilemma you may now suddenly have an epiphany. If you’ve been waiting for something or someone to arrive it could happen now!

We all have the ability to focus on the positive and make the most of trying situations. Use your energy wisely and constructively. Rather than branching out in new directions, go down a tried and true path. Be patient and really cautious with the words you choose and use. Drive extra carefully. Take time to REview. Think before you take action as your mind (Mercury) could be playing tricks on you! Stay as focused as possible and don’t let it run your life. I do the Solstice and Equinox charts from a mundane perspective. I like to look at how the chart might affect our nation over the next 3 months until the Spring Equinox. You can also apply the info personally.

On December the 21, the Sun will enter Capricorn at 0 degrees which marks the beginning of the Winter Solstice. At that point and over the next few days, the Sun will snuggle (conjunct) up with Pluto which entered Capricorn in November of 2008. Pluto is all about total transformation ~ destruction and resurrection! Capricorn represents Corporate America, Conservatism, and Capital. Upon Pluto’s entry into Capricorn we saw the downturn in the economy and the devastation of major corporations.

Not only are the Sun and Pluto together in the Winter Solstice chart, they are on the Ascendant! (Starting point/ruler of chart). I think this is when the ‘shit hits the fan’! Some have predicted that President O’Bama will face a crisis equivalent to 9/11/2001 very early into his administration and this could be it. What better time for a terrorist attack but on a Christian holiday?

In any case, the next 3 months will be about total change brought about by something equal to a major catastrophe. And that cataclysm may very well involve our country’s resources.

Chiron (wounds that need healing), Neptune (escapism), Jupiter (abundance, party on…) and the Moon (feelings, nurturing, real estate, home and family), are all tight (conjunct) in our private financial sector ruled by Aquarius (the unusual, unconventional, and unexpected). In lay mans terms I would say the economy is lot worse than we would like to believe and collectively there’s a large measure of denial and false hope. Neptune also rules gas and oil so look for gases prices to go up where they have remained pretty steady.

These planets fall directly opposite retrograde Mars (aggression, ambition, war) in the area of investments and collective resources. I feel a lot more money will be spent on the conflict overseas, continuing to deplete our own economy. We may also stir up opposition from those investing in our financial system. Mars is ruler of the real estate area so look for fallout from the foreclosure market to impact our finances too.

Saturn, the traditional ruler of Aquarius, sits in the very public 10th house. We will look to collectively rebuild and restructure through hard work and determination. Possibly working more for less money. Inflation is a very real possibility. Unfortunately Saturn is in a hard aspect to Sun/Pluto, making us face the hard core reality of our present circumstances.

Uranus (the unexpected, enlightened, media), modern ruler of Aquarius, resides in the house of networking. I feel the press will play both positive and negative roles in exploiting current situations and exposing what is going on behind the scenes. It is in a hard aspect to Venus in the 12 house of secrets.

Venus rules money as well as love. It positively aspects the afore mentioned planets in Aquarius in our income sector. There may be some discreet help from a hidden benefactor. However the media may steer us toward a false ally who is actually a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Uranus is trine (happy, happy, joy, joy) the South Node (our undoing) in the house of partners but also open enemies. Do to our dire circumstances we are vulnerable to someone who may appear to be extremely helpful, a rescuer of sorts, but is actually out to undermine us.

The silver lining in all this doom and gloom (Not my natural nature as an astrologer!) will be Mercury conjunct (next to) the North Node (true fate and destiny) in Capricorn. Because Mercury is poised to go retrograde, we might look at how we survived recessions and depressions in the past as a way to manage future challenges. The nodes work on approximately 19 year cycles. What we implement now can greatly impact the next 2 decades!

Factor in the USA, Gemini Rising Chart

USA Pluto falls in late Capricorn next to our financial house (again!) reinforcing total transformation of the economy brought on by extreme circumstances. USA Moon falls right in with the stellium (group of planets) in Aquarius doubling the Lunar impact. Family values and religion/Spirituality will be hot topics. Highlighting that is USA Chiron in the sector of family and homes. It also continues the theme of an open wound around the real estate market.

USA Uranus and Mars in the health and work sector, keeps unemployment and healthcare in the news but more as a side show rather than a main event.

The stellium of USA Sun, Venus, and Jupiter along with USA Mercury conjunct W.S. South Node in Cancer, ruling our partnership sector, emphasizes my above scenario about attracting a false friend. I refer to the old cliché if something (someone) appears too good to be true, it probably is!

Interestingly USA Neptune falls in the zone of foreign affairs, legalities, Spirituality, higher education, and publishing, directly opposite W.S. Uranus. Since Uranus is the cosmic electrician he will either produce a power surge, or if not properly grounded will short-circuit our efforts and blow a fuse. The intent of Uranus is to produce change and those who are resistant to change (fixed signs, earth signs) will generally have a difficult times breaking old patterns and
routines. It is absolutely vital to approach things with an open hand and especially with an open mind! Uranus is often called the Awakener. Uranus’s sojourn through Pisces has helped many awaken out of their spiritual amnesia.

Saturn in Libra exactly conjuncts the MC in the Sibily chart for the United States. The pressures on the president are enormous. In the eyes of many the president is perceived as being too politically passive (Libra?) and lacks the courage to implement real
change. In last months newsletter I mentioned the last time Saturn made its ingress into Libra was on September 22,1980 the very day Iraq invaded Iran. There was the assassination attempt on president Reagan back in March of 1981. Abraham Lincoln was killed and the United States was enmeshed in a Civil war back in 1862. Saturn will make its return to its natal position in the Sibily chart come next November just in time for the general elections of 2010? Could this be a harbinger of things to come such as a strong conservative (Saturn) turn out? Or, will the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in Pisces prevail? Historically Jupiter/Uranus cycles are times of new scientific breakthroughs and discoveries. These are also times historically that coincide with Liberal and progressive empowerment. We shall see?

harmony. Some other interesting events that occurred during Saturn�s last transit in Libra was John Lennon was shot dead on December 8, 1980, The assassination attempt on president Reagan in March 1981 and Israel bombs Iraq nuclear plant on July 7, 1981.
Recently, we all heard the rumors of Israel wanting to take out Iran�s nuclear facilities if open discussion and negotiations fail to produce conciliatory results. Let us all hope that peace, diplomacy and cooperation become the reality.

On a personal level Saturn in Libra suggests the need to redefine, reevaluate our commitment within existing relationships. Saturn will show you how to build on what�s working in your present relationships and to cut off what�s not working. Time for a reality check!

Saturn is returning to its natal place in the Sibily chart for the United States on October 29,2009. Major shift of gears on November 15 as Saturn in Libra squares Pluto in Capricorn. The threat of terrorism could emerge from the dark underworld. Old structures, businesses and governments are torn down in order to give birth to the new. Many things that gave us a sense of security or comfort in the past are no longer viable at this time. This is a time of release and letting go of what�s not working inour lives. Give it up! Pluto always takes something away before he leaves us with his gifts.
